THE SPACES IN BETWEEN

Becoming
"The quiet conversation emerges in the spaces in between, where the form becomes formless and invites us into a deeper way of seeing."  Karen Mayo, 2016

The Spaces In Between occupies a pivotal position within my practice, marking the transition between the installation-based investigations of Changing Spaces and the more recent body of work, Evolution. Constructed from the original photographic files used to create the moving image work Moths Dissolving, this previously unreleased image transforms a temporal sequence into a single photographic form, capturing a moment of transition suspended between movement and stillness.

The work emerged from an ongoing exploration of the spaces that emerge in between the layers of images within a work, the subtle transformations that occur as one form dissolves into another. Layered from multiple photographs and moments in time, the figure exists in a state of continual becoming—simultaneously present and absent, emerging and disappearing. The body remains recognisable, yet begins to move beyond fixed representation, occupying a liminal space between form and formlessness.

While earlier works explored the relationship between perception, participation and embodied experience, The Spaces In Between shifts the focus toward transformation itself. The image no longer documents a body in space; rather, it reflects a process of emergence. Through repetition, transparency and layered movement, the work invites viewers to consider identity not as a fixed condition, but as something fluid, evolving and continually in motion.

Viewed in the broader context of my practice, this work serves as a visual bridge between two significant bodies of work. It retains the conceptual concerns of Changing Spaces—the instability of the image, the body as a site of enquiry and the experience of transition—while foreshadowing the themes that would later emerge in Evolution. Here, the body begins to dissolve into something less defined and more atmospheric, moving beyond representation toward a state of transformation and possibility.

As a transitional work, it reflects an enduring interest in the spaces that exist between certainty and ambiguity, presence and absence, image and experience. It marks a moment where the enquiry itself begins to shift, inviting viewers into a deeper contemplation of change, perception and the continual process of living change.
