The Evolution of Knowing is a forthcoming exhibition bringing together significant works from across Karen Mayo's artistic practice, from her early photographic investigations during her Bachelor of Visual Arts through to her current body of work, Evolution.

Presented alongside the launch of the book The Evolution of Knowing, the exhibition traces an evolving creative enquiry through photography, moving image, projection, installation, public art, and abstraction.

Works including Metaphoria, Gateways, An Epiphany With Space, Changing Spaces, and Moths Dissolving will sit in conversation with Evolution, revealing connections that have emerged across different periods of the practice.

Although created years apart and through different forms, the works return to an enduring question:

How can an artwork create a moment of presence—a point from which the viewer can leap off?

Across the exhibition, light, movement, space, the human form, and the spaces between states of being become ways of exploring this question. Photography moves beyond the document to become an experience—an encounter through which perception might shift, awareness deepen, and something previously unseen might become visible.

At the centre of the exhibition is Evolution, a new body of work currently in development. Through large-scale photographic works and moving image, the human form moves between visibility and abstraction, exploring transformation not simply as something represented, but as something experienced.

The accompanying book, The Evolution of Knowing, extends this journey through the artist's own creative history, bringing the artworks into dialogue with the ideas, encounters, and ways of knowing that have shaped the practice over time.

Together, the exhibition and book offer more than a retrospective view of where the work has been.

They reveal an evolving practice still in motion.
