Moving beyond the two dimensionality of the photograph a dialectic relationship exists between the varied perceived surfaces and the image itself. The use of light within the composition, the human form and the photographic surface all utilise a powerful psychological and physical space within the image. Intentionally the work is presented to the viewer as a unframed large format (60 inch x 60 inch) print to reiterate a direct relationship to these underlying and complex surfaces both in the viewers physicality to the print and the experiential value of the artwork.
The lack of depth of field in the composition, the use of a textured cotton rag print, the models movement in relation to the varying surfaces and the body all elicits a relationship that produces a forceful and painful drama played out as a psychologically claustrophobic relationship within the work.
